Step One

Sometimes you don't know what to do. You don't know where you are. You've given up. You have no hope. I've been there, and it almost cost me my life. But Jesus met me where I was and helped me get up and walk with Him. I didn't know where I was going, but I knew that I wanted to walk toward Him.
If you are reading this and you are that low, can I ask you to just get up and take a step? Take a step to Jesus. Take a step to a loved one. Take a step to a friend, a coworker, a stranger, even someone online. Just step. It might seem like the hardest thing you've done, but it isn't. The step down may be easier, but the next steps up are brighter. You can look up, and you can go.
I believe we are often called to be what we see is missing around us. If I see people are failing at being loving, then I'm supposed to be that love. If I have no one around me when I'm down, I need to learn how to get up, be healthy, and reach out to those who are down.
Maybe your situation isn't serious at all. Maybe you've got a great family, job, and outlook. Maybe you even feel bad saying you're not sure where to step, but no one has it all figured out. Can I also ask you to step?
One of the keys to stepping is not knowing where to step, but just knowing the direction. It doesn't need to be into a bright and beautiful field. It may just be one step away from the darkness. We all have things that we know are not helping us, and we all know things that we should be doing that we aren't. I love how basic and easy the Bible makes sanctification (getting better). Ephesians 4:22-24 says, "22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness."
I don't know where you are at with God, or if you even believe in Him, but if He exists, then His principles are faithful, no matter where or who you are. They are also simple. The Bible says that it's a two part solution, you have to stop the bad thing, and replace it with a good thing.
So if you're reading this, all I ask is for you to ask yourself and answer two questions that will set you on a better path. What am I doing that is not good for me that I'm willing to stop? What is one thing that is good for me that's realistic for me to start?
Then Step.
